The following summary on DVKs and DVPs was forward to the KA9FOX web site by: Bob Patten, N4BP, n4bp@bcfreenet.seflin.lib.fl.us ----- From: Bill Rindone To: cq-contest@tgv.com Subject: DVP & DVK Survey The abbreviated replies to my query on "What's a good DVP / DVK" follow. Most answers were short and concise without any technical comment. The following comments lead me to believe that W9XT would be my personal answer. I've tried to contact W9XT over the phone for a few days, but can't get any closer than an uniformative answering machine. (note, W9XT now has a web site at: "http://www.QTH.com/W9XT" - per KA9FOX) KY1H: Bill, I have been using K1EA DVP' here for years now. I have six of them and have used them for driving Kenwood, Icom and Yaesu radios. They work with CT of course a(and) the recording quality is great". "Available from LZ Engineering. Web page htt://www.systems.sysu.com/dvp/ or call 617-646-7490." VE6JY: "MFJ 432 works well here, use several in m/op events. Not perfect, but cheap and convenient, w/good audio." WW1M: "My vote for best voice recorder is the Contest Card, by W9XT. Very reliable, uses no interrupts or hard disk space, made in the USA, works with CT, NA, TR, and its' own stand alone software. See ads in NCJ and CQ Contest." W9XR: "I started with a Digitech, went to a K1AR DVP, and ended up with W9XT. Iam very satisfied with the W9XT. Its easy to use and have no problems with several of them that we use at W3GH." K9JF/7: "I have been using the K1EA DVP for a couple of years. Have checked it out with the locals and they said they can't tell the difference between my real voice and the DVP. Other than the setup and getting it working, it seems to work FB." N3RR: "Bill buy a K1EA DVP, install it in your PC and don't worry about it. They are available via an ad in QST. Someone else is manufacturing them now, but if they are the same as I have, it'll play fine." K7LXC: "K1EA DVP. That's the one I've been using for a couple of years, the board inside the computer type. Once the laborious setup is done (if you use all the phonetics automatically). operation is pretty slick." "Like they say keep pressing F1". K7FR: Bill, I use the W2IHY box. I know, ot's old tech, but hey it works! Have interfaced it to the PC so the F keys make it talk. Also use the voice mems on my 850....". AA9AX: The only true DVP I know of is the Harvard Radio (K1EA) DVP. I've used one for years with no problems. (Oh, well...there is a little hum on the audio, but I am told this usually turns out to be a ground problem!). The DVP is neat because it does it ALL. When I enter a call on the keyboard, it will call the guy, give the exchange...and then another key sends me on my merry way by logging the qso and send 'thank you - QRZ Contest AA9AX'. I hardly ever talk...without the DVP I would do ZERO voice contesting." WG9L: I've been using the W9XT contest card for about a year and a half. It works great and doubles as a cw memory keyer, with a fast reed relay in the output section. Highly reccomended." ????: "I've been using GetTech Q218 Digital Voice Keyer for about 3 years now and have no complaints. I use it with a TS690 and my brother uses his with a TS940. I mounted mine in a Radio Shack box.... The only problem that we have encountered was with the audio drive level adjustment which is kind of touchy, but once you have it set it all works fine. I think the board ran about $150.00.
