PRIMUS Loss Control Services

Saving Businesses Thousands
In Worker's Compensation Costs!

PRIMUS, a leader in loss prevention, provides businesses with the tools that minimize safety and worker's compensation losses. It focuses on the following elements:

Safety Program Development

The first thing an OSHA inspector will ask for when beginning an inspection is the written safety program. It should be accurate and comprehensive, containing all the elements necessary to insure compliance to all applicable federal, state and local health and safety laws. PRIMUS works with the customer to develop a written program that goes beyond compliance to take a proactive approach to safety, reducing the likelihood of citations and fines.

Worker's Compensation Premium Audits

PRIMUS conducts a thorough audit of the classification codes to insure that employees are properly coded and that, where possible, the lowest allowable rate is used. PRIMUS's experience has been that there is often a good deal of variability in the premium process and that reviewing the numbers may uncover substantial over-payments to insurance carriers. Special endorsements to policies should also be scrutinized for effective dates and changes to classifications.

Substance Abuse Protocols

One of the most effective ways to keep problem employees out of a business is to effectively screen them before they come in. Drug testing is one way to accomplish that. It is important that testing procedures be developed that reflect management's desires but also meet the legal requirements. PRIMUS helps develop policies as well as recommend testing facilities that meet SAMHSA certification. As more businesses establish some form of drug testing, those who don't test run the risk of inheriting the past problems of those who do.

Return-to-Work Programs

Unfortunately, no matter how safety conscious an employer is, they will likely experience work-related injuries at some point in time. How they handle the claim, however, can often spell the difference between a costly exercise or a cost effective one. A good return-to-work program recognizes the fact that the sooner an injured employee is brought back to productive work, the less costly the claim. Making modified duty positions available keeps the employer in control of the claim, which is critical.

Third Party Claims Administration

Most claims are fairly straightforward and will require minimal intervention, particularly claims that have no lost time. However, for those that do involve lost time, PRIMUS can recommend the best way to handle the claim, from investigation to providing modified duty to ultimately contesting the claim if the circumstances warrant it. Recommendations will also be made as to medical fees and their being "reasonable and customary."

Experience Modification Factor Audits

PRIMUS has been a part of several significant premium refunds as the result of reviewing the experience modification factor worksheets, developed by the state rating bureaus with input from the insurance carriers. Of primary importance is verifying the level of claim reserves and their appropriateness. Carriers can be surprisingly flexible on reserve amounts so it is extremely important to challenge them when they are felt to be over-reserved. However, reserves need to be adjusted before the "unit stat date" which typically runs six months after the policy's annual beginning date.
